CTN TORAH MINUTE

Posted by rabbi.deutsch on 24 Sep 2012 / 0 Comment

Hi,

Hope you’re having a great day.

… A couple took their eight year old daughter to a trendy restaurant.

Hanging on the walls were sports and Hollywood memorabilia.

And there was a picture of Clark Kent changing into Superman.

Mom says to Dad, “Look at her.  She’s clueless.  She doesn’t know who Superman was.”

And Dad says, “Forget Superman!

She doesn’t even know what a phone booth is!”

… What made me think of this story?

You may remember that I recently told you how I finally became high tech.

How I started jogging with a MP3 player.

Well this was not the first time I became high tech.

It also happened around 25 years ago.  When I first started jogging.

I went all out…

And bought a Sony Walkman!

Now that was amazing!

Cars had started coming with cassette tape players.

But listening to music while you jogged?

And not having to hold a radio up to your ear?

It was an instant success.

Over 200 million were sold

Now there was something amazing that would be here for ever!

… Not quite.

It was in the news on Monday.

Sony announced that they were retiring the Walkman.

It’s totally obsolete.  So “clunky”.

So “primitive!”

And the Walkman has gone the way of the phone booth!

… And it reminded me of what a great Rabbi once said.

He pointed out that human creativity comes up with a new invention.

And people get excited.  They cheer.  They’re amazed.

But before long?

You know what that invention brings?

A big yawn!

“Give me a break!”

But, the Rabbi pointed out…

G-d created a beautiful world and gave us the ability to enjoy it.

To be moved by it.

People have been watching sunsets for thousands of years.

And they still say the same thing!

“Wow!”

… By all means, enjoy your latest gadget!

But do yourself a favor today.

You don’t even need to wait for sunset.

Look up at the beautiful sky….

And say “wow!”

All the best,

Rabbi Moshe Katz
